- Rewinding the Watch
- The Night Watch by Dutch artist Rembrandt looms large both figuratively, as
- one of the world’s most famous paintings, and literally, measuring 12.4 x 14.9
- feet (379.5 x 453.5 cm). The 17th-century work is renowned for its revolutionary
- approach to the group portrait, as well as its stunning use of light. And this
- week The Night Watch entered the next phase in a multiyear restoration, as a
- team of conservators began removing the painting’s varnish , the Rijksmuseum
- announced yesterday.

- Behind the Headlines
- A resignation roils the Church of England, while President-elect Donald Trump builds his
- cabinet, and climate representatives from around the globe converge for COP29.
- Archbishop of Canterbury resigns
- Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury, resigned yesterday due to public criticism over
- his handling of sex-abuse allegations. An independent investigation found that Welby failed
- to report to the police allegations against John Smyth, a volunteer at Christian summer
- camps who is said to have abused more than 100 men and boys over decades. Welby, who
- became leader of the Church of England in 2013, was the 105th archbishop of Canterbury, a
- position first held by Saint Augustine of Canterbury from 597–604.
- Trump’s rst picks
- The cabinet of President-elect Donald Trump is beginning to take shape, with a few
- appointments announced early this week. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (pictured below,
- with Trump) has been picked to lead the Department of Homeland Security, while New York
- congresswoman Elise Stefanik was tapped for U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and
- former New York congressman Lee Zeldin will head the Environmental Protection Agency.
- Meanwhile, Sen. Marco Rubio is rumored to be on the short list for secretary of state.

- COP29 heats up
- This week marks the 29th Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on
- Climate Change, or COP29 for short. The conference kicked off on Monday with a
- heightened sense of urgency. This year is on track to be the warmest on record, at 1.5 ℃
- (2.7 °F) over preindustrial norms. That temperature threshold is significant since the Paris
- Agreement of 2015 explicitly aimed to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to
- 1.5 ℃ over preindustrial norms.
